Why is it important to create a vision or goal statement? Because people with visions are generally happier people. They have something to look forward to every day ..... something to get out of bed for every day. Visions, or goals, can focus on all areas of life .... financial, family, spiritual, health .... and can come in all sizes. However, no matter if you are looking at a smaller, short-range goal or a larger, long-range goal, the steps required for success are the same. One of those steps is establishing a "goal or vision statement". It helps you to drill down what your goal is so it can be attainable and aligns with your vision to maintain balance in all areas of your life. So, how does a person go about creating a vision statement?
How To Create A Vision Statement
Why is it necessary to write it down? Because then it is in front of you .... on paper .... you wrote it. It is like making a contract with yourself. One way to do this is by using the S.M.A.R.T. method:
Specific: State what you want to accomplish > "I will work out every day"
Measurable: Use a specific "quantity" to make it trackable > "I will work out 30 minutes every day"
Attainable: Your goal must be realistic...reasonably reachable > "I want to do 20 pushups" vs "I want to do 100 pushups"
Which one is more realistic, more attainable for you?
Relevant: Make sure your goal is something you care about and not what others care about. If you are satisfied with your excercise regimen then focus more on another area you would like to improve such as switching up to a
healthier diet or making your home non-toxic.
Time-bound: A goal will never be accomplished unless there is a deadline...a time frame for completion.
The Mayo Clinic recommends "at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity". So, what would a S.M.A.R.T. goal look like for this?
"To exercise for 45 minutes, for 4 days every week by the end of 3 months".
Remember the point is to accomplish your "vision" by the deadline or end of the time-frame established .... not to start out with it. So, start out small and gradually build up for success.
