If you have been following me, you know I am a huge fan of supporting the liver. Since I have Hypothyroidism, learning why you need Sulfur for your thyroid is just one more reason for me to go that "extra mile" for my liver.
How your liver and thyroid are connected
Your liver is the body's primary detoxification organ and is responsible for a multitude of processes including the conversion of T4 to the active T3 hormone. T3 is the hormone that tells your body to "get to work" and grow hair, boost metabolism and create more energy.
Without a sufficient amount of T3 many suffer hair loss and fatigue. Some even experience extreme sensitivity to foods and drugs.
Why sulfur?
Sixty percent (60%) of T4 to T3 conversion takes place in the liver. Whereas, 20% takes place in the digestive system. Both require "sulfur" for this conversion to take place.
Some people may have had a reaction to a medication or other products containing "sulfides or sulfites synthetic compounds" and think they are allergic to "sulfur". They are NOT the same.
Sulfur is a natural substance (not synthetic) ... a mineral that makes up one-fourth of your body and the third (3rd) most abundant mineral. It is also the sixth (6th) most abundant macromineral in breast milk
- Increases the synthesis of glutathione and N-acetyl L-cystein (NAC) for thyroid support
- Promotes healthy hair and skin
- Supports the immune system
- Recommended for joint pain
- Activiates enzymes to help break down food and convert it to energy
Sulfur must, however, be continually replenished.

Supplements: MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)
If you are like me, I do not always have the time to ensure I am cooking the foods I need to support every need and function of my body. In addition, not all food is created equal. Nutrients in foods can vary depending on the soil, air, water, growing conditions it was grown in. So, supplementing this mineral that is so vital for the health of my liver and my thyroid only makes sense to me.
My supplement of choice is Sufurzyme Powder or Sulfurzyme Capsules. Not only are these a great source of sulfur (MSM), but they also contain Ningxia Wolfberries which is a super food for the entire body. Check out everything it does just for the brain.
