Identify Your Triggers: How Safe Are Your Laundry/Cleaning Products?
A lung study showed that using traditional cleaners in your home one time a week is the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes per day. Even products advertised as “green” or “natural” may contain ingredients that can cause health problems. Some can even be flammable or corrosive.

Laundry and household cleaning products contain toxic fragrances, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia and bleach.

Some of these products include:
   > Aerosol spray products, including health, beauty and cleaning products
   > Air fresheners
   > Chlorine bleach
   > Detergent and dishwashing liquid
   > Dry cleaning chemicals
   > Rug and upholstery cleaners
   > Furniture and floor polish
   > Oven cleaners
   > Laundry Products and Dryer Sheets

Chemicals can infiltrate our bodies through two primary avenues......our airways and our skin.

When you breathe in the smell of these toxic products dangerous VOC’s are sent straight into your blood stream via the lungs. This can attribute to increased risk of asthma and COPD.

The experts attribute the decline in lung function to the damage that cleaning agents cause to the mucous membranes lining the airways. Think about it....these are cleaning agents that are meant for cleaning your floors, your toilets....not your lungs!!

Consider Lysol. The product label itself states “Hazards to Humans and Domestic Animals.” That’s reassuring. Approximately 1% of the product consists of the active ingredients, while about 99% are “other ingredients”. This begs the question, what exactly are those “other” ingredients? According to the Safety Data Sheet for Lysol, these include propane and butane....think lighter fluids friends!!

The OSHA safety data sheet for the primary active ingredient in Lysol includes several warnings. I don’t know about you but I do not wear a mask, gloves, or goggles when I clean my home.

Your Skin:
Our skin is the largest organ in the body. It absorbs anything and everything it comes into contact with. It takes less than 30 seconds for those toxic chemicals to be absorbed through your skin.

The thing with fabric softener/dryer sheets is that it doesn’t actually soften anything. Instead, it lubricates the fabric with a slimy coating that prevents static and creates the sensation of softness. That slimy coating is made up of a chemical called quaternary ammonium compounds (QACS) that has been shown to cause or worsen asthma, irritate sensitive skin and has been linked to long-term health problems like cancer or reproductive issues.

Consider This:
   > What you’re cleaning your floors (and your babies, kids and fur babies) are absorbing through your feet
   > What you’re cleaning your counters being transferred into the food you’re eating
   > What you’re cleaning your bathtub’re soaking your body in
   > What you wash your clothes and bedding’re covering your entire body with
   > Your skin is the largest organ of your body and absorbs everything you put on it

You can absolutely utilize options that are safe, effective, and economical. There is no compromise here. This is what I use to literally clean everything....floors, mirrors, counters, tub and even produce.
