July is known within the airline industry as the busiest travel month of the year and is the most popular month for any kind of summer travel. The air is warm, in most areas the weather is pleasant making for opportune times to visit beaches, national parks and other outdoor attractions.
This always seems obvious, but when you’re out and about, it’s so easy to forget to drink enough water.  And, if you are in a drier climate than you are used to, you will need to drink more water.

When to Increase Hydration
  • when visiting a drier climate than you are used to
  • when flying - the humidity in an airplane can be as low as 10-15% .... 3X drier than the Sahara Desert!
    • on an average 10 hour flight, men can lose approximately 2 litres (1/2 gallon) of water and women around 1.6 litres. This means that on a London to Sydney flight a passenger could lose up to 4 litres and 8% of their bodily water
  • when driving - hydration is not as readily recognized
    • sitting for long periods of time on a road trip, your body are naturally warmer, which means you will tend to sweat more
    • air conditioning also removes moisture from the skin
      • normal water loss through respiration
  • higher elevations - your body loses water through respiration at high altitude twice as fastas it does at sea level
    • decreased humidity - the higher the altitude the lower the humidity
      • dry air will pull moisture from your skin and other parts of the body, including the lungs, eyes, and nose
    • increased respirations - less oxygen, your breathing will become faster and shallower > causes increased water loss
      • hiking, climbing, skiing increases loss in fluid levels
    • increased urine output
It’s never fun to arrive on an empty gas tank. if you arrive at a high-altitude destination already dehydrated, your vacation experience is already starting on the wrong foot. It is a lot easier to stay hydrated than to try to catch up later.  So, don't worry about those bathroom stops as you are driving or while you are skiing.  Dehydration can actually mask the symptoms of altitude sickness .... dizziness, headache, muscle aches, and nausea. So, be proactive with hydration:
  • incorporate high water content foods into your meals
    • add sliced up (apples, cucumbers, peppers) to backpack for a lightweight, easy, hydrating snack on the go
  • add electrolytes to your drinking water
  • minimize alcohol - as a diuretic your kidneys, ureters, and bladder all work together to get rid of the liquid as quickly as possible
  • avoid dry, salty, snack food

When Layers Can Be Useful
Dressing in layers may not be the first thing you think of when preparing to travel during the summer.  However, there are several situations when having that extra layer of protection can be beneficial.
  • temperatures vary - depending on where you are traveling .... there are certain states that have cooler mornings and evenings
  • indoor locations - no matter what the temperature is outside .... theaters, restaurants, airports, shopping malls, etc. .... the AC tends to get cranked up

Why Sanitizing is Important
  • hotels - you can never be too cautious .... literally spray down everything and anything you may touch .... including the sheets and the ventilation system. You have no idea when the filters were changed last or how thorough the room was cleaned.
  • camping - all bathrooms are not equipped with soap (or TP for that matter)
  • outside surfaces - chairs and tables may need to be wiped off
  • hands - there are always occasions for hands to be cleaned
What to Bring
Why are these products beneficial?  Studies have shown that essential oils are effective at reducing air-borne bacteria. So, by using essential oils in a diffuser, the air is, essentially, being cleaned.

Why Thieves? Many essential oils have purifying and cleansing properties. However, the Thieves oil blend has the legendary "folklore" story behind it. And, now, recent studies have confirmed and explained its strong antibacterial activity

The Thieves Spray and the Thieves Hand Sanitizer contain "denatured alcohol". Most use chemicals to denature the alcohol.  However, this would never pass Young Living's "Seed to Seal" guarantee so "peppermint" is used in the denaturing process instead.

All of these products are plant-based and formulated free of petrochemicals, mineral oil, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, dyes, preservatives, or toxic ingredients. The wipes are also 100 percent biodegradable wipe material, chlorine free, made with 100 percent natural fibers, are rich in antioxidants and skin conditioning ingredients and kills 99.99 percent of germs and bacteria.
